Our aim
We aim for this website to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA.
Accessibility was part of how the site was designed and built, not an afterthought. Even so, we may not have gotten everything right, and if you find something we have missed, we want to know. The full guidelines are published by the World Wide Web Consortium (opens in a new tab).
What the site does
- Keyboard access. Every link, button, menu and form works with a keyboard, and a clearly visible outline shows where you are.
- A skip link. A “Skip to content” link at the top of every page lets you bypass the navigation.
- Clear structure. Pages are organized with headings and landmarks, so screen-reader users can move around them easily.
- Text alternatives. Photographs have written descriptions, and purely decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
- Color contrast. Text and controls are designed to stand out clearly against their backgrounds.
- Reduced motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, scrolling animations and the background video are switched off, and the guest reviews do not move on their own.
- Pausable video. The silent background video on our home page can be paused at any time with its pause button.
- Labeled forms. Every form field has a visible label. If something is missing, a written message tells you and takes you to the field that needs attention.
- Zoom and small screens. Pages reflow to fit phones and enlarged text without sideways scrolling.
- The photo viewer. Full-screen photos can be browsed with the arrow keys and closed with Escape, which returns you to where you were.
Content from other providers
A few parts of a visit rely on services we do not control: reservations are made on Cloudbeds’ booking site, and maps come from Google Maps. We cannot guarantee how accessible those services are.
If either one gets in your way, please call or email us and we will be happy to help. Our address is always written out in text, so you never need the map to find us.
Visiting in person
This statement covers the website. If you have questions about getting around the Estate or Somers House themselves, such as steps, entrances or bathrooms, please call or email before you book and we will talk it through with you.
